Fire Equipment Manufacturers' Association – Government Relations Committee
Members of the Fire Equipment Manufacturers' Association have formed the Government Relations Committee (GRC), to address legislative and regulatory issues relating to portable fire extinguishers, pre-engineered systems and other fire protection products. The GRC's main goals focus on helping educate appointed and elected officials by advancing the implementation of a layered defense against the ravages of fire. The objectives of the GRC have been accomplished by monitoring and influencing legislative and regulatory initiatives at the State and Federal level along with partnered outreach programs to specific communities.

The Association has been successful in several venues by forming coalitions of safety conscious individuals and organizations to bring credible arguments to legislators and regulatory agencies. They explain the need for a layered approach to safety, which includes basic fire protection features such as smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers and fire resistive construction, along with engineered and pre-engineered systems, such as sprinkler systems and kitchen hood systems. Redundancy has long been a staple of fire and life safety, and this committee’s actions support and reinforce that principal.
