Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association Publishes Whitepaper on “The Evolution of Fire Hose”
New whitepaper from non-profit trade association dedicated to manufacturing commercial fire protection equipment highlights history, benefits and standards of modern fire hose
CLEVELAND, Ohio (August 17, 2021) – The Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association announces the publication of a new whitepaper detailing the evolutionary journey of fire hose and other related fire protection equipment. The whitepaper, titled “The Evolution of Fire Hose,” was produced by the association’s Fire Hose, Cabinet & Valve Division.
Like other types of firefighting equipment, fire hose has gone through notable evolutionary changes since it was first invented in 1898. The Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association details many of these changes in its newly published whitepaper, including the advancement from leather and cotton-jacketed hoses to fabric-reinforced fire hose.
The whitepaper highlights the many benefits of modern fire hose, including the fact they are up to 30 percent lighter in weight compared to earlier versions. Other advantages include:
- Ability to withstand high levels of pressure
- Easier to carry up flights of stair
- Simpler to repack when done using
Wildland forest fire hose and occupant-use/rack hose are specifically addressed in the whitepaper. Couplings, an important part of current fire hoses, are also featured. The whitepaper concludes with a review of the rigorous fire hose standards set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Factory Mutual Global (FM) and UL.
