CLEVELAND, Ohio (June 12, 2019) – Building owners and occupants are invited to watch a new educational video produced by Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association. The video quizzes building owners’ and occupants’ knowledge of fire extinguishers and demonstrates how to use them safely and efficiently.
The Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association is composed of industry experts and member companies that have many years of experience in fire protection and are committed to minimizing loss of life and property due to fires. A primary goal of the association is to help building owners implement efficient safety designs that meet or exceed minimum codes and regulations. They do this by providing educational opportunities and tools, including their newly released fire extinguisher video.
“We produced this video to encourage confidence in viewers who may be nervous or unsure of how to operate a fire extinguisher properly,” said Chuck Kimball, chair of the Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association’s Joint Portable / Systems Committee. “We also hope the video urges building owners to make sure their buildings meet minimum safety standards.”
The highly informative video, which is accessible on the association’s YouTube channel, addresses several important pieces of information about fire extinguishers and how to safely use them in emergencies. Viewers are “tested” on their basic fire extinguisher knowledge in a true or false format, including:
- Selecting the right type of extinguisher for each building area
- How to determine when an extinguisher will be effective and when it will not
- Why extinguishers should be installed in multiple locations.
Viewers of the video not only receive verbal instruction on extinguisher use, but also have the opportunity to see extinguishers in action. The video also reminds viewers how to use the “PASS” method to quickly operate an extinguisher in the proper manner, and discusses what to do after a flame is successfully put out and why it’s important to stand by with an extinguisher in case the blaze reignites.
